Focus on Imaging - Preview

February 29, 2012  •  Leave a Comment
This week on the Blog we are looking forward to Focus on Imaging at the NEC in Birmingham. Focus (as it is known) is the UK's biggest photographic exhibition with over 200 exhibitors from all fields of photography. The doors open on Sunday 4th March and are open until Wednesday 7th March.

For professional and amateur photographers alike the show is a must visit event with free seminars and training sessions as well as being a great chance to see all the latest equipment from every manufacturer you can imagine. Wednesday is also a great day for anyone looking for a bargain as most exhibitors will be looking to sell off their stand display stock at discount prices!!

So what are going to be the main highlights for us? Read on to see who we will be visiting during the show and what we recommend you do not miss out on seeing during your visit!

Nikon
We are full time Nikon users and members of Nikon's Professional User program so one of our first ports of call will be the Nikon stand where there will be lots of interesting new toys to look at.

The last month has seen Nikon release 2 new Full Frame camera bodies both squarely aimed the the working professional. The D4 which is their new flagship model aimed very much at sports photographers in this Olympic year and the D800 which has attracted massive critical debate about the merits of its 36 mega-pixel resolution and the effect this will have on the cameras ability to capture workable images at high ISO ratings (something vital to the wedding photographer who has dark churches and hotels to deal with)

We are looking at acquiring a new Full Frame camera body in the coming year and so the chance to try the new D4 and D800 against the existing D3s and D700 will be a great chance to evaluate the options and inform our decision. Nikon have a series of seminars demonstrating both of these cameras running every day during the show.

The Flash Centre
The Flash Centre are something of a Focus tradition these days! Their stand is always a hive of activity with people shopping for new equipment and trying to crane their necks to get a view of the speakers who provide demonstrations throughout the show from the back of The Flash Centre stand.

This year they have a brilliant line up of speakers including BjornThomassen, Mark Cleghorn, Stuart Wood and our friend and now SWPP Master Photographer, John Denton! What these guys don't know about using and crafting light is not worth knowing and their seminars are always very busy so get there early if you want to have a decent view!

The Flash Centre also have some wonderful show specials that they offer during the show (they even offer these in store and via the website while the show is on), you can view the show specials PDF at the following link Focus Flyer

The Societies
The Societies are one of the UK's most popular trade associations with training and education at the forefront of their drive to improve the professional standards and ethics within the photographic industry.

This is clearly demonstrated through their incredible range of seminars during the Focus in Imaging show. Covering everything from business and marketing skills to photographic techniques, posing and lighting there is something for everyone at some point during the show so I would recommend checking them out. Details of their seminar schedule can be found at the following links.

Loxley Colour
We have been using Loxley Colour for our Albums now for a couple of years and Focus on Imaging will give us another chance to get a hands on look at the new products that they can offer us for 2012.

We are specifically looking for small affordable book options for our Portrait photoshoots as we know that a number of our clients are looking for cost effective photobook and similar products to remind them of their "Day to Remember".

The above is just the tip of the iceberg however as we will also be planning to visit a whole host of other suppliers, from lenses and camera accessories through album and frame suppliers to website hosting and software vendors we will be on the look out for a huge range of potential and existing suppliers with a view to developing or building our relationships and contacts!

Please leave a comment below and tell us what you are most looking forward to about your visit to Focus this year? It will be great to see what everyone else is excited about!
